Introduction
†
The final hours before the cross are unfolding, and everything Jesus
warned is now coming together in that generation.
†
The leaders are plotting, the betrayal is set, and the Passover
becomes the moment of fulfillment, not just remembrance.
†
This chapter shows the transition from the Old Covenant meal to the
reality fulfilled in Christ before the judgment of AD 70 (Matthew
26:28; Hebrews 8:13).
Luke 22:1
The Feast
of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was getting close
†
This is the exact appointed time, not coincidence (Exodus 12:14).
†
The Passover pointed to Christ, and now the reality is present (1
Corinthians 5:7).
† Redemption and judgment
are about to meet in that generation.
Luke 22:2
The
chief priests and scribes were looking for a way to kill Him, but
they feared the people
† Their fear shows
their authority was already weakened (John 11:48).
†
They rejected the stone God chose (Psalm 118:22).
†
This reveals hardened covenant leadership.
Luke
22:3
Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the
twelve
† Betrayal comes from within, just
like Israel's history (Psalm 41:9).
† Judas
is responsible for his actions.
† Spiritual
warfare is unfolding through real events.
Luke 22:4
He
went away and discussed with the chief priests and officers how he
might betray Him to them
† Religion is now
working with betrayal to destroy truth.
†
Israel's leadership is rejecting their Messiah openly.
†
This plan is intentional.
Luke 22:5
They
were glad and agreed to give him money
† They
valued silver over truth (Zechariah 11:12).
†
Corruption is fully exposed.
† The price
shows their hearts.
Luke 22:6
So he
consented and began seeking a good opportunity to betray Him without
a crowd present
† Darkness prefers secrecy.
†
They feared people more than God.
† God still
controls the timing.
Luke 22:7
Then came
the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be
sacrificed
† Christ is the true Lamb (John
1:29).
† This connects Exodus to
fulfillment.
† The old system is ending.
Luke
22:8
Jesus sent Peter and John, saying go and prepare
the Passover for us so that we may eat it
†
Jesus remains in full control.
† This
preparation leads to covenant change.
† The
final Passover is about to be fulfilled.
Luke 22:9
They
said to Him where do You want us to prepare it
†
The disciples still see this as a normal meal.
†
They do not yet understand the shift.
† Jesus
is guiding them step by step.
Luke 22:10
He
said to them when you enter the city a man will meet you carrying a
pitcher of water, follow him into the house that he enters
†
This shows divine knowledge.
† Nothing is
random.
† God is directing every detail.
Luke
22:11
You shall say to the owner of the house, the
Teacher says to you, where is the guest room in which I may eat the
Passover with My disciples
† Jesus speaks
with authority.
† The place is already
prepared.
† This moment is appointed.
Luke
22:12
And he will show you a large furnished upper
room, prepare it there
† Everything is
already set in place.
† God's plan is
complete.
† The stage is ready for
fulfillment.
Luke 22:13
They left and
found everything just as He had told them, and they prepared the
Passover
† His words prove true exactly.
†
This builds confidence in what follows.
†
Fulfillment is unfolding step by step.
Luke 22:14
When
the hour had come, He reclined at the table, and the apostles with
Him
† The appointed hour has arrived (John
17:1).
† This is a covenant turning point.
†
The apostles witness this transition.
Luke 22:15
He
said to them, I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you
before I suffer
† Jesus knew what was
coming.
† His desire shows purpose.
†
This meal leads into His sacrifice.
Luke 22:16
For
I say to you, I shall never again eat it until it is fulfilled in the
kingdom of God
† The Passover reaches
fulfillment, not continuation.
† The kingdom
is near.
† This is tied to their
generation.
Luke 22:17
And when He had
taken a cup and given thanks, He said take this and share it among
yourselves
† The cup represents covenant
unity.
† This is no longer just ritual.
†
It points to fulfillment.
Luke 22:18
For I
say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on
until the kingdom of God comes
† The kingdom
is about to come.
† This is not distant.
†
Fulfillment is near.
Luke 22:19
And when
He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to
them, saying this is My body which is given for you, do this in
remembrance of Me
† The bread now represents
His body.
† The meaning has changed.
†
Remembrance now centers on Christ.
Luke 22:20
And
in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying this cup
which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood
†
The New Covenant is established (Jeremiah 31:31).
†
His blood replaces sacrifices.
† The Old
Covenant is passing away.
Luke 22:21
But
behold, the hand of the one betraying Me is with Mine on the table
†
Betrayal happens at the covenant table.
†
This shows the contrast of hearts.
†
Proximity does not mean faithfulness.
Luke 22:22
For
indeed, the Son of Man is going as it has been determined, but woe to
that man by whom He is betrayed
† God's plan
stands firm.
† Judas is accountable.
†
Prophecy does not remove responsibility.
Luke 22:23
And
they began to discuss among themselves which one of them it might be
who was going to do this thing
† The
disciples are unaware.
† They are still
thinking naturally.
† This reveals their
limitation.
Luke 22:24
And there arose
also a dispute among them as to which one of them was regarded to be
greatest
† They are focused on status.
†
They still misunderstand the kingdom.
†
Growth is still needed.
Luke 22:25
And He
said to them, the kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those
who have authority over them are called benefactors
†
Earthly power is control based.
† This is not
God's model.
† The world system is being
contrasted.
Luke 22:26
But it is not this
way with you, but the one who is the greatest among you must become
like the youngest, and the leader like the servant
†
Greatness is humility.
† Leadership is
service.
† The kingdom reverses worldly
values.
Luke 22:27
For who is greater, the
one who reclines at the table or the one who serves, is it not the
one who reclines, but I am among you as the one who serves
†
Jesus models service.
† He is the example.
†
This defines leadership.
Luke 22:28
You
are those who have stood by Me in My trials
†
Their faithfulness is acknowledged.
† They
remained through difficulty.
† Loyalty
matters.
Luke 22:29
And just as My Father
has granted Me a kingdom, I grant you
† The
kingdom is being given.
† This is present,
not future.
† Authority is being shared.
Luke
22:30
That you may eat and drink at My table in My
kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of
Israel
† This speaks of covenant judgment.
†
The apostles have a role in it.
† This
connects to Israel's end.
Luke 22:31
Simon,
Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat
†
Spiritual testing is real.
† Peter will be
tested.
† This shows spiritual conflict.
Luke
22:32
But I have prayed for you, that your faith may
not fail, and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your
brothers
† Jesus intercedes.
†
Restoration is expected.
† Failure is not
final.
Luke 22:33
But he said to Him,
Lord, with You I am ready to go both to prison and to death
†
Peter is confident but unaware.
† Zeal is not
strength.
† This leads to failure.
Luke
22:34
And He said, I say to you, Peter, the rooster
will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know
Me
† Jesus knows the outcome.
†
This shows His authority.
† Peter will fall
but recover.
Luke 22:35
And He said to
them, when I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, you
did not lack anything, did you, they said no, nothing
†
God had already provided.
† Their past proves
it.
† They are reminded of His care.
Luke
22:36
And He said to them, but now, whoever has a money
belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and whoever has no
sword is to sell his coat and buy one
† The
situation is changing.
† Difficulty is
coming.
† Conflict is near.
Luke
22:37
For I tell you that this which is written must be
fulfilled in Me, and He was numbered with transgressors, for that
which refers to Me has its fulfillment
†
Fulfillment is happening now.
† Prophecy is
completed in Him.
† This points to Isaiah
53:12.
Luke 22:38
They said Lord, look,
here are two swords, and He said to them, it is enough
†
They misunderstand again.
† Jesus ends it
quickly.
† The focus is not physical
weapons.
Luke 22:39
And He came out and
proceeded as was His custom to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples
also followed Him
† Jesus continues in
obedience.
† This place ties to prophecy.
†
The moment is near.
Luke 22:40
When He
arrived at the place, He said to them pray that you may not enter
into temptation
† Prayer guards against
failure.
† They are being warned.
†
Readiness is required.
Luke 22:41
And He
withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and He knelt down and began
to pray
† Jesus models submission.
†
He turns to the Father.
† This shows
dependence.
Luke 22:42
Saying Father, if
You are willing, remove this cup from Me, yet not My will, but Yours
be done
† This shows real struggle.
†
Yet full submission.
† Perfect obedience is
displayed.
Luke 22:43
Now an angel from
heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him
†
Heaven supports Him.
† Strength is given.
†
God is present.
Luke 22:44
And being in
agony He was praying very fervently, and His sweat became like drops
of blood falling down upon the ground
† This
shows intense suffering.
† The weight is
immense.
† He remains committed.
Luke
22:45
When He rose from prayer, He came to the
disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow
†
They are overwhelmed.
† They fail to stay
alert.
† Weakness is exposed.
Luke
22:46
And He said to them why are you sleeping, get up
and pray that you may not enter into temptation
†
The warning is repeated.
† Prayer is
essential.
† The test has come.

How
It Applies To Us Today
† We trust
Jesus' words because they were fulfilled exactly.
†
We live in the New Covenant reality, not the shadow.
†
We stay spiritually alert and prayerful.
† We
understand the kingdom is established.
† We
walk in what has already been fulfilled.
