The
Cloud of His Ascension
Main Text: Acts 1:9
"And after He had
said these things, He was lifted up while they were watching, and a
cloud took Him up out of their sight." Introduction: Many have read Acts 1:9 and
assumed that Jesus is still physically in the sky, waiting to come
back the same way. But what if the cloud imagery
points to something deeply rooted in the Old Testament? As Preterists, we interpret this event not with a futuristic
lens, but with a covenantal and fulfilled understanding. 1. The Cloud Was Not Weather, It Was Glory The cloud in scripture is often
the visible symbol of God's presence: Exodus 13:21, "And the Lord
was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day..." Exodus 40:34, "Then the
cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord
filled the tabernacle." Jesus being taken up in a cloud was not about altitude, but
about authority and glory. 2. Jesus Ascended to Reign, Not to Wait Daniel 7:13-14, "I kept
looking in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven
One like a Son of Man was coming... And to Him was given dominion,
honor, and a kingdom..." Daniel sees the arrival of the
Son of Man in heaven, not a future descent to earth. Acts 1:9 is the fulfillment of Daniel 7, Jesus is receiving
the kingdom, not departing on hold. 3. The Return in Like Manner Already Happened Acts 1:11, "This Jesus, who
has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way
as you have watched Him go into heaven." He left in a cloud, He returned
in the judgment clouds. Matthew 24:30, "And then
the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all
the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of
Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory." This was fulfilled in AD 70, His presence in judgment, just
like Yahweh came in the clouds in Isaiah 19:1. 4. Jesus Ascended to Fulfill All Things Ephesians 4:10, "He who
descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the
heavens, so that He might fill all things." The ascension was about
fulfillment, not physical distance. He was enthroned and returned in judgment on that
generation just as He promised. 5. Where Did Jesus Go? Not to a location in outer space. Hebrews 9:24, "For Christ
did not enter a holy place made by hands, a mere copy of the true
one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God
for us." Heaven is the realm of God, not
limited by geography. The ascension was covenantal. He passed into the true Holy
of Holies to establish the New Covenant. Conclusion: Acts 1:9 is not about an
unfinished mission, but about the fulfillment of Daniel's prophecy
and the transition from Old Covenant shadows to New Covenant glory. Jesus ascended in a cloud,
symbolizing His divine enthronement. He returned in the same way, in judgment and glory, just as
He said He would, before that generation passed away. Call to Reflection: Do we still wait for a coming in
the clouds, or do we recognize the fulfilled glory of our reigning
King? Let us live as those who know He is seated, His kingdom
established, and His judgment completed.
