Introduction

† Many Christians think biblical prophecy is only about predicting future events. Yet the New Testament repeatedly points believers back to what God had promised and what He faithfully fulfilled. Understanding fulfilled prophecy isn't just about knowing the past, it gives us confidence in God's faithfulness, strengthens our faith, and helps us live for Christ today instead of fearing what's supposedly still coming.

† The apostles continually reminded first century believers that God's promises were unfolding exactly as foretold. Their confidence rested in fulfilled prophecy, not speculation about distant events.

† When we see God's promises fulfilled exactly as He declared, our faith becomes anchored in His faithfulness. We can trust every promise He has made because He has already proven Himself completely reliable.

Acts 3:18

But the things which God previously announced by the mouths of all the prophets, that His Christ would suffer, He has fulfilled in this way.

† Peter declared that God fulfilled exactly what the prophets had spoken concerning Christ's suffering.

† Fulfilled prophecy demonstrates that God keeps every covenant promise according to His perfect timing.

† Our faith grows stronger when we realize Christianity rests upon fulfilled promises, not failed expectations. (Luke 24:44)

Luke 24:44

Now He said to them, "These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all the things that are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled."

† Jesus Himself expected His disciples to understand that the Scriptures were being fulfilled in Him.

† The entire Old Testament pointed toward Christ and the establishment of the New Covenant.

† Seeing these fulfillments removes doubt and replaces it with confidence in God's unchanging Word. (John 19:28-30)

2 Corinthians 1:20

For as many as the promises of God are, in Him they are yes; therefore through Him also is our Amen to the glory of God through us.

† Every promise of God finds its "Yes" in Christ.

† Believers aren't waiting to discover whether God will keep His promises, He already has demonstrated His faithfulness in Christ.

† Because God has kept His greatest promises, we can trust Him with every promise that remains for our daily lives. (Hebrews 10:23)

Matthew 24:34

Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.

† Jesus gave a clear time statement that His generation would witness these covenantal events.

† Understanding this verse builds confidence that Jesus spoke truthfully and that His words never failed.

† Fulfilled prophecy removes unnecessary fear because Christ's prophetic words came to pass exactly as He declared. (Luke 21:20-22)

Revelation 1:1-3

The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show to His bond-servants, the things which must soon take place; and He sent and communicated it by His angel to His bond-servant John, who testified to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, everything that he saw. Blessed is the one who reads, and those who hear the words of the prophecy and keep the things which are written in it; for the time is near.

† Revelation opens by declaring that its prophecies would happen shortly because the time was at hand.

† God's timetable proved true, just as every other prophecy concerning Christ proved true.

† Understanding fulfilled prophecy allows believers to focus on faithful Christian living instead of living in constant fear of future prophetic disasters. (Revelation 22:6-10)

Hebrews 10:37

For yet in a very little while, He who is coming will come, and will not delay.

† The writer assured his first century audience that Christ's coming was still "a very little while" away.

† This reinforces the consistent New Testament message that these covenantal events were imminent for that generation.

† Understanding this time statement helps us trust every other time statement found throughout the New Testament. (Hebrews 10:25; Hebrews 8:13)

2 Peter 1:19

And so we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts.

† Peter pointed believers to the certainty of fulfilled prophecy rather than speculation.

† Biblical prophecy was given to strengthen faith because God always accomplishes what He promises.

† Josephus described the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70 in The Wars of the Jews, Books V-VI, confirming the catastrophic events Jesus foretold.

† Eusebius, Ecclesiastical History, Book III, Chapter 5, recorded that Christians remembered Jesus' warnings and fled Jerusalem before its destruction.

† Tacitus, Histories, Book V, documented the Roman campaign against Jerusalem, providing additional historical confirmation of the events surrounding AD 70.

How It Applies To Us Today

† Fulfilled prophecy reminds us that God has never failed to keep a single promise.

† We can devote our lives to serving Christ, loving others, and proclaiming the gospel instead of constantly waiting for prophetic events that Scripture declared were near to the first century believers.

† Every fulfilled prophecy encourages us to trust God with the promises He has made for our daily walk with Him.

† Understanding fulfilled prophecy keeps us from interpreting every world event as a sign that Christ has not kept His promises.

† It allows us to read the Bible with confidence instead of fear because God's prophetic Word has proven completely trustworthy.
