Amos 7 The Lord Shows Judgment And Rejects False Authority Fulfilled

Introduction

Amos 7 shows how God revealed judgment before it came, giving warning, showing mercy, and then declaring the end when the time was fulfilled.

This is not about a distant future, it's about covenant judgment that came upon Israel, just as Jesus said all these things would come upon that generation.

We see mercy, warning, rejection of truth, and the final measuring of Israel by God's standard.

Amos 7:1-3
This is what the Lord GOD showed me, and behold, He was forming a locust swarm when the spring crop began to sprout. And behold, the spring crop was after the king's mowing. And it came about, when it had finished eating the vegetation of the land, that I said, Lord GOD, please pardon! How can Jacob stand, For he is small? The LORD relented of this. It shall not be, said the LORD.

The locusts show devouring judgment, stripping the land, pointing to covenant curses already established.

Amos intercedes and God relents, showing mercy and delay before judgment.

This reveals God's patience, giving time for repentance before the final judgment came.

Amos 7:4-6
This is what the Lord GOD showed me, and behold, the Lord GOD was calling for a judgment by fire, and it consumed the great ocean and began to consume the farmland. Then I said, Lord GOD, please stop! How can Jacob stand, for he is small? The LORD relented of this. This too shall not be, said the Lord GOD.

The fire represents deeper and more intense judgment, reaching the foundations.

Again Amos intercedes and again God relents, showing repeated mercy.

This reflects how God continued to delay judgment until the appointed time.

Amos 7:7-9
This is what He showed me, and behold, the Lord was standing by a vertical wall with a plumb line in His hand. And the LORD said to me, What do you see, Amos? And I said, A plumb line. Then the Lord said, Behold I am about to put a plumb line in the midst of My people Israel. I will no longer spare them. The high places of Isaac will be desolated, and the sanctuaries of Israel will be laid waste. Then I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.

The plumb line shows God measuring Israel by His standard.

There is no intercession here, judgment is now certain.

This marks the point where God declares He will no longer pass over them.

Amos 7:10-13
Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent word to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is unable to endure all his words. For this is what Amos says: Jeroboam will die by the sword and Israel will certainly go from its land into exile. Then Amaziah said to Amos, Go, you seer, flee away to the land of Judah and there eat bread and do your prophesying! But no longer prophesy at Bethel, because it is a sanctuary of the king and a royal residence.

Amaziah represents corrupt religious leadership that rejects truth.

He accuses Amos falsely and tries to silence him.

This shows how truth is often rejected by those protecting their position.

Amos 7:14-15
Then Amos replied to Amaziah, I am not a prophet, nor am I the son of a prophet; for I am a herdsman and a cultivator of sycamore figs. But the LORD took me from following the flock and the LORD said to me, Go prophesy to My people Israel.

Amos was not part of their religious system, he was called directly by God.

Truth is not dependent on religious institutions.

God raises up voices outside corrupt systems to speak His word.

Amos 7:16-17
So now hear the word of the LORD: you are saying, You shall not prophesy against Israel nor shall you speak against the house of Isaac. Therefore, this is what the LORD says: your wife will become a prostitute in the city, your sons and your daughters will fall by the sword, your land will be parceled up by a measuring line, and you yourself will die on unclean soil. Moreover, Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.

Judgment is pronounced directly on the false priest.

Those who reject God's word will not escape judgment.

This points to the collapse of the old covenant system.

Historical References

Josephus records famine, fire, and destruction in Jerusalem, matching the prophetic warnings.

Eusebius confirms the fall of Jerusalem ended the temple system.

Tacitus records the burning of the temple and devastation of the city.

How It Applies To Us Today

God gives warnings before judgment, and we shouldn't ignore His word.

Religious systems can become corrupt, so we must test everything by truth.

God's standard doesn't change, He measures all by righteousness.

Fulfilled judgment proves God's word is true.

We recognize the old covenant system has already been judged and fulfilled.
