Micah 5 The Ruler From Bethlehem And The Shepherd King Fulfilled

Introduction

Micah 5 reveals the coming of the Messiah, the true ruler from Bethlehem, and shows how God would bring deliverance through Him.
This was fulfilled in Christ within that generation, not thousands of years later.
It shows His humble birth, His eternal nature, and His reign as Shepherd King over His people.

Micah 5:1
Now muster yourselves in troops, daughter of troops; They have laid siege against us; With a rod they will strike the judge of Israel on the cheek.

This points to the rejection and humiliation of Christ when He was struck before His crucifixion. (Matthew 26:67)
The siege reflects the coming judgment upon Jerusalem. (Luke 21:20)
Israel rejected their true Judge, fulfilling this in the first century. (John 19:3)

Micah 5:2
But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Too little to be among the clans of Judah, From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, From the days of eternity.

This was fulfilled when Jesus was born in Bethlehem. (Matthew 2:1)
His eternal nature proves He is the eternal Son. (John 1:1)
This confirms the Messiah came within that generation. (Matthew 16:27-28)

Micah 5:3
Therefore He will give them up until the time When she who is in labor has given birth to a child. Then the remainder of His brethren Will return to the sons of Israel.

God allowed Israel to continue until the Messiah came. (Galatians 4:4-5)
The birth points to Christ and the beginning of restoration. (John 11:52)
The remnant returning shows the gathering of God's people. (Ephesians 2:14-16)

Micah 5:4
And He will arise and shepherd His flock In the strength of the LORD, In the majesty of the name of the LORD His God. And they will remain, Because at that time He will be great To the ends of the earth.

Christ is the Good Shepherd who leads His people. (John 10:11)
His kingdom spread to the ends of the earth in the first century. (Colossians 1:23)
His people remain secure in His kingdom. (Hebrews 12:28)

Micah 5:5
And this One will be our peace. When the Assyrian invades our land, When he tramples our citadels, Then we will raise against him Seven shepherds and eight leaders of men.

Christ Himself is our peace, not a future system. (Ephesians 2:14)
The Assyrian represents oppressive powers like Rome in that generation.
The shepherds reflect leaders raised up in the early church.

Micah 5:6
And they will shepherd the land of Assyria with the sword, The land of Nimrod at its entrances; And He will rescue us from the Assyrian When he attacks our land And when he tramples our territory.

Deliverance comes through Christ, not physical warfare. (John 18:36)
The sword represents the word of God. (Ephesians 6:17)
The gospel overcame the Roman world.

Micah 5:7
Then the remnant of Jacob Will be among many peoples Like dew from the LORD, Like showers on vegetation Which do not wait for man Or delay for the sons of men.

The remnant became a blessing among the nations. (Acts 1:8)
The gospel spreads quietly but powerfully like dew.
God's work is not dependent on human systems.

Micah 5:8
The remnant of Jacob Will be among the nations, Among many peoples Like a lion among the animals of the forest, Like a young lion among flocks of sheep, Which, if he passes through, Tramples down and tears, And there is none to rescue.

The church carries authority through Christ. (Luke 10:19)
This speaks of spiritual authority, not physical violence.
God's kingdom is unstoppable. (Daniel 2:44)

Micah 5:9
Your hand will be lifted up against your adversaries, And all your enemies will be eliminated.

Christ defeated His enemies through the cross. (Colossians 2:15)
Judgment came on Jerusalem in AD 70. (Luke 21:22)
His kingdom stands victorious now.

Micah 5:10-11
And it will be in that day, declares the LORD, That I will eliminate your horses from among you And destroy your chariots. I will also eliminate the cities of your land And tear down all your fortifications.

God removes reliance on human strength. (Zechariah 4:6)
This points to the end of the Old Covenant system. (Hebrews 8:13)
Fulfilled in the fall of Jerusalem.

Micah 5:12-13
I will eliminate sorceries from your hand, And you will have fortune-tellers no more. I will eliminate your carved images And your memorial stones from among you, So that you will no longer bow down To the work of your hands.

Idolatry is removed under Christ. (1 Corinthians 10:14)
The gospel brought purification to God's people.
False worship was judged and removed.

Micah 5:14-15
I will root out your Asherim from among you And destroy your cities. And I will execute vengeance in anger and wrath On the nations which have not obeyed.

God fully cleanses His people from idolatry.
Judgment came in that generation. (Matthew 24:34)
His righteous kingdom is now established.
