Ezekiel 45 The Holy Portion, The Prince, And Righteous Worship Fulfilled

Introduction

Ezekiel 45 continues the temple vision, but it shifts focus to land, leadership, and worship, showing how everything must be set apart as holy.

This isn't about a future physical system, it's pointing to the order and righteousness established in Christ and fulfilled in the first century.

The emphasis is on holiness, justice, and proper worship, all of which were fulfilled when the old corrupt system was removed and replaced with the new covenant reality (Hebrews 8:13).

Ezekiel 45:1

Now when you divide by lot the land for inheritance, you shall offer an allotment to the LORD, a holy portion of the land; the length shall be the length of twenty-five thousand cubits, and the width shall be ten thousand. It shall be holy within all its surrounding boundary.

This holy portion represents separation, God setting apart what belongs to Him (Ezekiel 44:28).

Under Christ, we are that holy portion, set apart as His people, not tied to land but to covenant identity (1 Peter 2:9).

The physical land here points forward to the spiritual inheritance in Christ, not a future real estate division (Hebrews 12:22).

Ezekiel 45:2

Out of this there shall be for the holy place five hundred by five hundred, square all around; and fifty cubits for its open space all around.

The perfect square shows completeness and order, just like the New Jerusalem is measured as a perfect cube (Revelation 21:16).

This isn't coincidence, it's fulfillment, showing God's dwelling is now perfected in His people.

The separation emphasizes holiness, something fulfilled in the church as God's dwelling place (Ephesians 2:21).

Ezekiel 45:3

From this area you shall measure a length of twenty-five thousand and a width of ten thousand, and in it shall be the sanctuary, the most holy place.

The sanctuary being most holy points directly to Christ as the true temple (John 2:19-21).

The old sanctuary was a shadow, now fulfilled in the spiritual reality (Hebrews 9:11).

This shows the shift from physical structure to spiritual fulfillment.

Ezekiel 45:4

It shall be a holy portion of the land; it shall be for the priests, the ministers of the sanctuary, who come near to minister to the LORD, and it shall be a place for their houses and a holy place for the sanctuary.

The priests here point forward to the royal priesthood in Christ (1 Peter 2:5).

No longer a Levitical system, now all believers serve as priests.

This was fulfilled when the old priesthood ended in AD 70 (Hebrews 7:12).

Ezekiel 45:5

An area twenty-five thousand long and ten thousand wide shall be for the Levites, the ministers of the house; they shall have it for a possession, for twenty chambers.

The Levites served in the old system, but that system has passed.

Their role is fulfilled in the body of Christ where all serve according to their calling (Romans 12:4-5).

This shows continuity in function but transformation in covenant.

Ezekiel 45:6

You shall assign for the possession of the city an area five thousand wide and twenty-five thousand long, alongside the allotment of the holy portion; it shall be for the whole house of Israel.

The city represents the people of God, not a literal future city.

This is fulfilled in the New Jerusalem, which is the church (Revelation 21:2).

The whole house of Israel includes both Jew and Gentile in Christ (Ephesians 2:14).

Ezekiel 45:7-8

The prince shall have land on one side and on the other of the holy allotment and of the property of the city, adjacent to the holy allotment and the property of the city, on the west side westward and on the east side eastward; and the length shall correspond to one of the portions, from the west border to the east border. It shall be his land for a possession in Israel; and My princes shall no longer oppress My people, but they shall give the land to the house of Israel according to their tribes.

The prince here points to Christ as the righteous ruler (Isaiah 9:6-7).

Unlike corrupt leaders of Israel, He doesn't oppress, He rules in justice.

This was fulfilled in contrast to the wicked rulers judged in AD 70 (Matthew 23:38).

Ezekiel 45:9

This is what the Lord GOD says: Enough, you princes of Israel! Put away violence and destruction, and practice justice and righteousness; stop your expropriations from My people, declares the Lord GOD.

This rebuke shows the corruption of Israel's leadership.

Jesus exposed this same corruption in His generation (Matthew 23:25).

Their judgment came when the system was destroyed.

Ezekiel 45:10-12

You shall have accurate balances, an accurate ephah, and an accurate bath. The ephah and the bath shall be of the same measure, so that the bath will contain a tenth of a homer, and the ephah a tenth of a homer; their standard shall be according to the homer. The shekel shall be twenty gerahs; twenty shekels, twenty-five shekels, and fifteen shekels shall be your maneh.

God demands fairness and justice, something Israel failed in.

Christ fulfilled this by establishing true righteousness (Romans 3:21-22).

This isn't about commerce laws today, it's about covenant justice fulfilled in Him.

Ezekiel 45:13-17

This is the allotment that you shall offer: a sixth of an ephah from a homer of wheat, and you shall give a sixth of an ephah from a homer of barley, and the prescribed portion of oil, namely a bath of oil, a tenth of a bath from each cor, which is ten baths or a homer, for ten baths are a homer; and one sheep from each flock of two hundred from the well-watered pastures of Israel, for a grain offering, for a burnt offering, and for peace offerings, to make atonement for them, declares the Lord GOD. All the people of the land shall give to this allotment for the prince in Israel. It shall be the prince's part to provide the burnt offerings, the grain offerings, and the drink offerings at the feasts, at the new moons, at the Sabbaths, at all the appointed feasts of the house of Israel; he shall provide the sin offering, the grain offering, the burnt offering, and the peace offerings, to make atonement for the house of Israel.

These sacrifices point forward to Christ's once-for-all sacrifice (Hebrews 10:10).

After AD 70, these offerings ceased because they were fulfilled.

The prince providing offerings points to Christ as both ruler and sacrifice.

Ezekiel 45:18-25

This is what the Lord GOD says: In the first month, on the first day of the month, you shall take a bull without blemish and cleanse the sanctuary. And the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering and put it on the doorposts of the house, on the four corners of the ledge of the altar, and on the posts of the gate of the inner court. You shall do the same on the seventh day of the month for everyone who goes astray or is naive; so you shall make atonement for the house. In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, you shall have the Passover, a feast of seven days; unleavened bread shall be eaten. On that day the prince shall provide for himself and all the people of the land a bull as a sin offering. During the seven days of the feast he shall provide as a burnt offering to the LORD seven bulls and seven rams without blemish on each of the seven days, and a male goat daily as a sin offering. He shall also provide a grain offering, an ephah for each bull and an ephah for each ram, and a hin of oil for each ephah. In the seventh month, on the fifteenth day of the month, at the feast, he shall provide like this for seven days, according to the sin offering, the burnt offering, the grain offering, and the oil.

These feasts all pointed to Christ and were fulfilled in Him (Colossians 2:16-17).

Passover was fulfilled at the cross (1 Corinthians 5:7).

The continuation here shows the pattern, but the reality has already come.

Historical References

Josephus records the corruption of the priesthood and leadership before AD 70, confirming the need for judgment.

Eusebius notes the destruction of Jerusalem as the end of the old covenant system.

Irenaeus taught that the old sacrificial system was temporary and fulfilled in Christ.

How It Applies To Us Today

We are the holy portion, set apart to God, not by land but by covenant identity.

Christ is our Prince, our Priest, and our sacrifice, we don't return to shadows.

True worship isn't tied to temple rituals, it's fulfilled in Spirit and truth (John 4:23).

Justice, righteousness, and holiness still matter, not through law, but through Christ in us.

We live in the fulfilled reality, not waiting for what has already been completed.
