John 8 Paraphrased
Introduction
Jesus confronts the leaders of Israel as their system is reaching its end and exposes their sin and blindness (Matthew 23:36)
He reveals Himself as the true light, showing their darkness and rejection of truth (Isaiah 60:1-2)
This chapter builds toward judgment on that generation that refused Him (Luke 19:41-44)
John 8:1
Jesus went out to the Mount of Olives
He separates from the temple system that was about to be judged (Luke 21:37)
The Mount of Olives is tied to judgment over Jerusalem (Zechariah 14:4)
This shows a shift away from the old covenant center
John 8:2
At dawn He returned to the temple, and people gathered around Him, so He sat and began teaching
The people were drawn to truth while leaders resisted it (John 7:46-48)
God was still extending mercy before judgment came (2 Peter 3:9)
Teaching in the temple shows patience before destruction
John 8:3
The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery and placed her in the middle
They used the law as a trap instead of for righteousness (Hosea 6:6)
Their actions reveal hypocrisy (Romans 2:21-23)
They cared more about accusation than justice
John 8:4
They said to Him, Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery
They focused on outward sin while ignoring their own (Matthew 23:25-28)
Their purpose was to accuse, not to restore (Revelation 12:10)
This reveals the corrupt use of the law
John 8:5
Moses commanded us to stone such a woman, so what do You say
They tried to trap Him between Roman authority and Mosaic law (John 18:31)
This shows the weakness of the old system (Hebrews 7:18-19)
They were testing Him, not seeking truth
John 8:6
They said this to test Him so they could accuse Him, but He bent down and wrote on the ground
Their intent was accusation, not righteousness (Psalm 56:5-6)
Writing on the ground reflects divine authority in judgment (Jeremiah 17:13)
He remains calm while exposing their motives
John 8:7
When they kept pressing Him, He stood up and said the one among you without sin should throw the first stone
He turns the law back on them (Romans 3:19)
The law condemns all, not just the accused (James 2:10)
Their guilt is exposed publicly
John 8:8
Then He bent down again and continued writing on the ground
He does not argue, He reveals truth (Isaiah 42:2-3)
Judgment is unfolding without force (John 3:19)
Their conscience is being stirred
John 8:9
When they heard this, they left one by one starting with the older ones until only Jesus and the woman remained
Their conscience testified against them (Romans 2:15)
The accusers are removed in shame (Psalm 1:5)
Truth drives out false judgment
John 8:10
Jesus stood up and said to her woman where are they has no one condemned you
He reveals mercy while exposing hypocrisy (Micah 7:18)
True judgment belongs to Him alone (John 5:22)
He addresses her without condemnation
John 8:11
She said no one Lord and Jesus said neither do I condemn you go and leave your sin behind
Mercy is extended with a call to repentance (Luke 5:32)
Grace does not excuse sin but transforms life (Titus 2:11-12)
This shows the heart of Christ
John 8:12
Jesus spoke again and said I am the light of the world whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life
He fulfills the promise of light to Israel (Isaiah 9:2)
Darkness represents the old system passing away (Colossians 1:13)
Following Him brings life and truth
John 8:13
The Pharisees said you are testifying about yourself your testimony is not true
They reject truth because it exposes them (John 3:20)
Their blindness fulfills prophecy (Isaiah 6:9-10)
They judge wrongly according to flesh
John 8:14
Jesus answered even if I testify about Myself My testimony is true because I know where I came from and where I am going but you do not
He speaks with divine authority (John 16:28)
Their ignorance is willful (1 Corinthians 2:14)
Truth stands regardless of their rejection
John 8:15
You judge according to human standards I am not judging anyone
Their judgment is fleshly and corrupt (John 7:24)
His mission was salvation before final judgment (John 3:17)
They lack true discernment
John 8:16
But even if I do judge My judgment is true because I am not alone the Father is with Me
His authority comes from the Father (John 5:30)
This shows unity between Father and Son (John 10:30)
His judgment is perfect
John 8:17
Your law says that the testimony of two people is true
He uses their own law to expose them (Deuteronomy 19:15)
They fail to keep what they claim to defend (Romans 2:23)
Their inconsistency is revealed
John 8:18
I am one who testifies and the Father who sent Me testifies about Me
The Father confirms Christ (Matthew 3:17)
This fulfills the requirement of witnesses (Hebrews 10:28)
They reject both witnesses
John 8:19
They said where is your Father Jesus answered you know neither Me nor My Father if you knew Me you would know My Father also
Knowing Christ is knowing God (John 14:6-7)
Their rejection proves separation (1 John 2:23)
They remain in ignorance
John 8:20
He spoke these words in the treasury and no one seized Him because His time had not yet come
His timing is controlled by God (John 7:30)
Judgment would come at the appointed time (Acts 17:31)
No one could act before that moment
John 8:21
He said again I am going away and you will seek Me and die in your sin where I go you cannot come
Rejection leads to death in sin (Ezekiel 18:4)
Separation from Christ means exclusion (John 14:3)
This is a warning to that generation
John 8:22
The Jews said will He kill Himself since He says where I go you cannot come
They misunderstand spiritual truth (John 3:4)
Their blindness continues (Isaiah 44:18)
They think only in physical terms
John 8:23
He said you are from below I am from above you are of this world I am not
He contrasts earthly and heavenly origin (James 3:15-17)
They belong to a system under judgment (1 John 2:17)
He stands outside that system
John 8:24
Unless you believe that I am He you will die in your sins
Faith in Him is required for life (John 3:18)
Their refusal seals their judgment (Mark 16:16)
This is a direct warning
John 8:25
They asked who are you Jesus said what I have been telling you from the beginning
His identity was already revealed (John 5:39)
Their refusal is willful (John 12:37)
They reject what is clear
John 8:26
I have many things to say and judge about you but He who sent Me is true and I speak what I heard from Him
His words come from the Father (John 12:49)
Judgment is based on truth (Psalm 119:160)
He speaks divine truth
John 8:27
They did not understand that He was speaking about the Father
Spiritual blindness prevents understanding (2 Corinthians 4:4)
Their hearts are hardened (Romans 11:7)
They remain confused
John 8:28
When you lift up the Son of Man then you will know that I am He
This points to the cross (John 3:14)
His death would reveal truth (Matthew 27:54)
Their actions would confirm it
John 8:29
The One who sent Me is with Me He has not left Me alone because I always do what pleases Him
Perfect obedience defines Him (Hebrews 4:15)
The Father is always with Him (John 16:32)
This confirms His authority

As He spoke these things many believed in Him
Truth produces belief in some (Acts 28:24)
A remnant always responds (Romans 11:5)
Not all reject Him
John 8:31
Jesus said to those who believed if you continue in My word you are truly My disciples
True faith continues (Hebrews 3:14)
Obedience marks discipleship (John 14:15)
This defines real belief
John 8:32
You will know the truth and the truth will set you free
Truth brings freedom from sin (Romans 6:18)
Freedom is found in Him (Galatians 5:1)
This is spiritual freedom
John 8:33
They answered we are Abraham's descendants and have never been enslaved how can you say we will be set free
They trust lineage over truth (Matthew 3:9)
They ignore spiritual bondage (Romans 6:16)
Their pride blinds them
John 8:34
Jesus answered everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin
Sin creates bondage (2 Peter 2:19)
True slavery is spiritual (Romans 7:14)
This exposes their condition
John 8:35
A slave does not remain in the house forever but a son remains forever
Covenant status determines inheritance (Galatians 4:30)
The old system lacked permanence (Hebrews 8:13)
Sons have lasting place
John 8:36
If the Son sets you free you will be free indeed
Freedom comes only through Him (John 14:6)
This is true lasting freedom (Romans 8:2)
No other source can free

I know you are Abraham's descendants yet you seek to kill Me because My word has no place in you
Physical descent does not equal faith (Romans 9:6-7)
Their actions reveal their hearts (Matthew 7:16)
They reject truth
John 8:38
I speak what I have seen with My Father and you do what you have heard from your father
Two sources are revealed (1 John 3:10)
Their actions show their allegiance (John 10:26)
They follow a different voice

They said Abraham is our father Jesus said if you were Abraham's children you would do what Abraham did
True children follow faith (Galatians 3:7)
Abraham believed God (Genesis 15:6)
They do not follow his example

Now you are trying to kill Me a man who has told you the truth this is not what Abraham did
Their intent proves they are not like Abraham (Hebrews 11:8)
Truth is rejected by darkness (John 3:19)
Their actions condemn them

You are doing the works of your father they said we were not born of immorality we have one Father God
They claim God but reject His Son (1 John 2:23)
Their confidence is misplaced (Jeremiah 7:4)
Their claim is false
John 8:42
Jesus said if God were your Father you would love Me
Love for Christ proves relationship (John 14:21)
Their hatred reveals truth (John 15:18)
They reject Him
John 8:43
Why do you not understand what I say because you cannot hear My word
Spiritual deafness blocks truth (Isaiah 6:10)
Their hearts are hardened (Hebrews 3:8)
They cannot receive it
John 8:44
You are of your father the devil and you want to do his desires he was a murderer and a liar
Their actions reflect the enemy (1 John 3:8)
Lies and murder define them (Genesis 4:8-9)
This exposes their nature
John 8:45
Because I speak the truth you do not believe Me
Truth is rejected by those committed to lies (2 Thessalonians 2:10-12)
Their unbelief is deliberate (John 12:37)
They choose darkness
John 8:46
Which of you convicts Me of sin if I speak truth why do you not believe Me
His sinlessness stands (1 Peter 2:22)
Their rejection has no excuse (Romans 1:20)
They cannot answer Him
John 8:47
He who is of God hears God's words you do not hear because you are not of God
Hearing reveals belonging (John 10:27)
Their rejection exposes them (1 John 4:6)
They are not of God

They answered are we not right in saying you are a Samaritan and have a demon
When truth is rejected insults follow (Matthew 10:25)
They resort to slander (Psalm 109:2-3)
This shows their hostility
John 8:49
Jesus answered I do not have a demon I honor My Father and you dishonor Me
He responds with truth (Isaiah 53:7)
Their dishonor shows rebellion (Malachi 1:6)
He remains faithful

I do not seek My own glory there is One who seeks it and judges
God is the judge (Ecclesiastes 12:14)
Christ submits to the Father (John 5:22)
Judgment is certain

If anyone keeps My word he will never see death

They said now we know you have a demon Abraham died and the prophets also yet you say he will not see death

They reject what they cannot see

Are you greater than our father Abraham who died who do you make yourself out to be
They fail to see His identity (John 5:18)
Pride blinds them (Proverbs 16:18)
They question Him

Jesus answered if I glorify Myself My glory is nothing it is My Father who glorifies Me
True glory comes from God (John 17:5)
Their claims are empty (Romans 2:17-24)
The Father honors Him

You have not known Him but I know Him if I said I did not know Him I would be a liar like you
He exposes their false claims (Hosea 8:2-3)
Truth separates Him from them (John 14:7)
They do not know God

Abraham rejoiced to see My day and he saw it and was glad
Abraham looked forward to Christ (Hebrews 11:13)
This shows continuity of God's plan (Galatians 3:8)
Faith saw ahead
John 8:57
They said you are not yet fifty years old and have you seen Abraham
They think physically (John 3:4)
Their understanding is limited (Isaiah 55:8-9)
They miss the point
John 8:58
Jesus said before Abraham was I am
He declares eternal identity (Exodus 3:14)
This is a direct claim to deity (John 1:1)
They understood the claim
John 8:59
They picked up stones to throw at Him but He hid Himself and left the temple
Their rejection reaches its peak (Acts 7:57-58)
This points to coming judgment on that system (Matthew 23:38)
He departs from the temple
Historical References
Josephus records the corruption and violence among Jewish leaders before AD 70
Irenaeus wrote about those who rejected Christ being judged in their generation
Eusebius described the destruction of Jerusalem as divine judgment
Clement of Alexandria spoke of the blindness of those who rejected truth
How it applies to us today
We don't rely on heritage or tradition, we rely on truth and obedience to Christ
We walk in the light and reject spiritual blindness
We understand rejection of truth leads to judgment while faith brings life
We remain in His word knowing that's where true freedom is found
